Weekly Address: Averting a Government Shutdown and Expanding Access to Affordable Healthcare

In this week’s address, President Obama says that on October 1, a big part of the Affordable Care Act will go live and give uninsured Americans the chance to buy the same quality, affordable health care as everyone else. It is also the day when some Republicans in Congress might shut down the government just because they don’t like the law. The President urged Congress to both pass a budget by Monday and raise the nation’s debt ceiling so that we can keep growing the economy.

Cuando, los sábados por la noche, conecto el canal Cubavisión a las 8 y 30, me apena que el tiempo sea inexorable y una anciana que conocí hace muchos años hoy esté muerta. En junio del 2011, escribí sobre esa mujer, de un brillo singular en los ojos, que me encontré en los campos de mi querido Holguín. Aquella nonagenaria me contó que “cuando tenía si acaso 14 años, estaba una noche en un baile de esos, cuando para su asombro los músicos pararon, nació el silencio y se abrió el camino a un hombre que acababa de llegar con otros montados en sus caballos. Ella se quedó mirando a aquel mulato no tan alto, pero bien plantao, vestido de blanco con unas botas relucientes, y dijo ‘ese podría ser mi hombre’.
