El 12 de septiembre próximo se cumplen 15 años del encarcelamiento en Estados Unidos de cinco antiterroristas cubanos. Uno de ellos, René González, regresó a Cuba después de cumplir toda su condena. Sería de una crueldad extrema aplicar a los otros cuatro la misma regla, siendo que sus condenas son mucho más largasy uno de ellos, Gerardo Hernández, moriría en prisión.

SINCE 2000, when a Mexican film director made “Amores Perros”, a gritty tale about dogs, crime and violence, the status of canines in society has improved a lot. In middle-class parts of Mexico, dog hotels, stylists and even “organic” dog-poo bins are so prevalent that having a pooch has become a symbol of upward mobility. No wonder, then, that the middle class is howling over a proposed tax reform unveiled on September 8th. Not only does this seek to raise taxes on everything from salaries over 500,000 pesos ($38,000) to private schools. It even slaps a levy on dog biscuits.Big businesses, too, are snarling. They claim to be perennial hostages to the taxman, forced to fork out more every time Mexico attempts to improve its measly tax take because 60% of the working population pay nothing. The reform aims to squeeze more out of them: by banning tax consolidation, which enables big firms to offset profits in one business with losses from another; and by slashing their ability to write off employee benefits for tax purposes. MOST people would agree that the crucifix that hangs prominently in Quebec’s provincial legislature is a Roman Catholic symbol. As such it should be banned under proposals Quebec’s government released on September 10th aimed at enshrining secularism in provincial law. But in the French-speaking province of 8.1m, where the majority still identify themselves as Catholics even if they no longer bother with church, removing the crucifix would be a step too far. So in its proposed ban on the display of “conspicuous” religious symbols in public buildings or by public employees, the ruling Parti Québécois made an exception for “items of cultural heritage”. Not surprisingly, these turn out to be Catholic.As in France, which banned headscarves in classrooms in 2004 and veils in public places in 2010, the real target of the proposals is the tiny minority of non-Catholic Quebeckers who wear headscarves or turbans. SÉRGIO CABRAL became governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro in 2007 during one of its periodic security crises, with criminals attacking police stations, burning buses and hijacking cars. But rather than send trigger-happy police into the favelas (self-built slums) controlled by drug gangs in retaliation, he prepared the state’s first sensible security policy in decades, focused on community policing. Mr Cabral’s election coincided with an economic recovery in Brazil’s former capital after decades of decline. La España arrogante, sin sede olímpica

La derrota de la España de Campofrío ha sido terrible. Algunos asumieron como si fuera un dogma la frase que se atribuye a Woody Allen: el 80% del éxito consiste en presentarse (Eighty percent of success is showing up) y pensaron que estaba todo hecho. Nos darían los Juegos Olímpicos de 2020 y además nos darían las gracias por tomarnos la molestia de organizarlos en Madrid. Pastor radical estadounidense planeaba quemar miles de Coranes

El pastor estadounidense Terry Jones, conocido por su radicalismo antiislámico, ha sido detenido en el condado de Polk con miles de Coranes empapadas de queroseno. Aunque los diputados del sheriff del condado no han confirmado los detalles de la detención, algunos medios aseguran que dentro de la camioneta de Jones se encontraban cerca de 3.000 ejemplares junto con una gran parrilla de barbacoa.

Advierten que el yuan podría noquear al dólar

El yuan es ya una de las diez divisas con más presencia internacional y China no piensa parar, pues tiene previsto adoptar más reformas y convertir el yuan en divisa mundial, comenta a Russia Today Thorsten Pattberg, experto chino de la Universidad de Pekín. Pattberg ve muy posible que la moneda china se convierta en la alternativa global al dólar y destaca el hecho de que el país asiático esté comprando cada vez más oro, lo que también contribuye a este objetivo.

El dictador Adolf Hitler dejará de tener el título de ciudadano honorario de Goslar, localidad del centro de Alemania. La decisión tomada por el ayuntamiento de Goslar se suma a las de las numerosas localidades que han decidido alejarse de la figura de Hitler retirándole el título de ciudadano honorario. A partir de la moción presentada por un grupo de diputados de izquierda, la localidad alemana será la última en retirar al líder nazi dicha distinción.

Siria debe decidir su propio destino, afirma canciller ruso

El pueblo sirio debe decidir su destino por sí mismo, ha reiterado el ministro ruso de Exteriores, Serguéi Lavrov. "No podemos actuar de acuerdo a la mentalidad del siglo XIX. No hay terroristas malos y terroristas buenos", insistió. El canciller, quien se encuentra este jueves de visita en Kazajistán, ha puntualizado que Moscú está realizando unos esfuerzos diplomáticos enérgicos para evitar la acción militar contra Siria.
